Snow Flowers

snow flowers no.1

I took this the morning we left Massachusetts. I think snow is so beautiful, especially when it is freshly fallen and just settles on everything like this. Just magical. I know many of you in other states want to choke me right now, as you’ve seen enough snow this winter to last you lifetime. I’m sorry- it is really a novelty to me; this was only the second time I’ve really been in it. Poor little Florida girl. Hang in there, spring is just about here.

Seth got worse today rather than better- with a fever, coughing and vomiting added to bad congestion. He is miserable, and I feel so bad for him. Most of my time has been spent taking care of him.
I’ll get everything up-to-date eventually…

Another hard day with a sick little one, though we did manage to get out for a while- it was a beautiful day out. I got my first two rolls of film from the Holga processed, and while there are a few duds, I really love some of them. Here are my favorites..

From home before we left:

beach blanket

From our trip:

I was again unable to get the pictures from my Nikon uploaded- my apologies. Seth has been in need of a lot of mommy time, and I am feeling pretty sick myself. Tomorrow I am going to try to rest more and see if I can knock this sucker out. If I get a chance I’ll post a group of our trip pictures. When I do get to it there are going to be a ton- I took a bunch today as well. My poor 365 project needs to be brought up-to-date too.

I’m Still Here…

I was really hoping to upload and post all of my pictures from the trip today, but Seth caught a bad cold while we were gone and today he needed a lot of extra cuddling and attention. Now that he is asleep I am finally getting on the computer, but I feel a little under the weather myself, so I’ll be off to bed in a little while and I am hoping to get all the pictures up tomorrow.

We got home around 10:45 last night, after a long day of traveling. It was truly a blessing that Manny won our tickets and that we could take this trip, but the downside of free tickets is that you don’t get much say in when you fly and where your connections are. Yesterday we left Boston at 2:30pm, arrived in Chicago (yes, Chicago) almost 3 hours later, had just enough time to buy a couple of turkey sandwiches and get to our next gate, and arrived in West Palm Beach at 9:50pm. When we got home it was nearly eleven. Seth was wonderful all things considered, but definitely (understandably) had a few meltdowns along the way.

We did have a wonderful time. It was so good to reconnect with family who I don’t see often enough. Yesterday morning before we left it finally snowed, and I went out to take pictures as the sun came up, and then Manny and I built a tiny snowman and we pulled Seth around the yard in a baby sled. It was a wonderful way to end our trip.

For now I have a few pictures I took with my phone using CameraBag- just some random things I didn’t take my Nikon out for… {because no blog post by a photographer should be pictureless, right?}

this one you’ve seen if you keep up with my Pixel 365 project- I took it from the plane on or way to Boston.

the same day, in the city- we could not see the tops of the tallest buildings; they were swallowed up by the fog.
Foggy Boston

this was in the Harvard Museum of Natural History- a really cool museum. I saw my first in-person dinosaur skeletons, and a lot of other very interesting things.

Goodnight, and do wish us an easy night please- we need it!

Painted Camera

So I brought my first roll of Holga film in to the lab today, the only lab around that I knew could process 120mm film, and it turns out that they can only do color film, and my roll was black and white. But they gave me the name and number for a place that can do b&w, and they sell color 120 there too, which is what I was looking for to begin with. Anyway, no pictures from the Holga yet. I am just itching to see how they turn out…

My friend Jami (who is an awesome, beautiful, creative mama and blogger) shared this idea with me, from a blog I happen to read already and enjoy (but I’d never seen this post before), and I immediately decided to go for it. I was in the mood to paint something and I had everything I needed already. I love how it turned out. I love that this camera is inexpensive enough that I would do something like this with it.

We’re flying to Massachusetts at 8am tomorrow, a much needed vacation and a chance to see some family (who haven’t even met Seth yet!) There is supposed to be snow, which will be exciting for us southeasters. I’ve been packing and preparing all evening. I may blog from there, but if not I’ll be back on the 27th, and with plenty of pictures I’m sure. Snowy white pictures.

{we’re leaving… on a jet plane… i get this song in my head every single time i fly, hehe}

Art on the Street

Street Painting Festival, Downtown Lake Worth.
It was fun, but my word was it crowded. It took us so long to find a parking spot when we got there. I was reminded of Mary Poppins, with the elaborate chalk art in the park, and then they jump in to that world. I watched that movie a lot as a child.

So much amazing talent… and I was sad that after all the work they’ve done, it will be washed away. Cars will be driving over those streets tomorrow as if nothing beautiful were ever there. It makes me sad because I am the type of person who likes to hold onto things, but really it is a practice in living in the moment, and enjoying things now rather than constantly worrying about preserving them for the future. It was art for the the sake of art- not to be sold or even saved; just created, enjoyed, and then left to wash away.

At least they can be immortalized through the lenses of many cameras. Here are a few that stood out to me…

These, because I just love sea turtles:

So interesting and it hardly looks like it was done with chalk:

Of course I just adored this one. I wish I could have met the artist; we’re probably kindred spirits.

I have not posted a lot lately. Part of the reason is that I never want my blog to feel like work, like an obligation on my to-do list. I want to always enjoy it. So since I have been pretty busy with other things lately I haven’t been here as much.

I also have been thinking a lot. I’ve been feeling contemplative and quiet and just haven’t wanted to write about it yet. Until now I guess. I have been looking at how I respond to stressful situations on a daily basis- kind of evaluating myself emotionally and interpersonally and I’m not always thrilled with what I see. I think my lack of grace there is a result of not enough sleep and not enough self-nurturing. I don’t remember the last time I just meditated, or did something to purposefully calm my mind at all. When I take even a very small amount of time every day for that type of activity I see a huge difference in myself, so I am really trying to work on that.

I wanted to crochet last night- I haven’t done it in so long (due to all the busyness)- and I couldn’t find my crochet bag. I have no idea what I did with it… which is sad and frustrating. It’s not like our house is very big, so it seems really strange to misplace something like that. Hopefully today I’ll remember where it is…

We are leaving on Tuesday for our trip up to the frozen North. We have actually had a few pretty hot days here- it feels like Florida again- so the Massachusetts whether is going to be a bit of a shock for us. I think snow is beautiful though, and I am looking forward to seeing the part of my family that lives up there. What I am not looking forward to quite so much is the hours on planes and in airports with a one year old. I need that grace I was talking about for that- like, triple doses of it. I am hoping that he will surprise us and be content the entire time…

I took my first Holga pictures yesterday. It feels strange and I keep wondering if I’m even doing it right. I’ll get it processed tomorrow so we’ll see.

Later today we’re going to a street painting festival- I’m definitely looking forward to it.

Sorry for not having any weekend links… except the thing that took up the vast majority of my time this week- my new website!

{happy weekend!}

Pink trumpets and Holga

February 19, 2010
by Hannah

We passed these trees one day when we couldn’t stop for pictures. They caught my eye because they are so pink- there is nary a leaf to be seen, and I thought it was unusual. They were in the parking lot of a Dunkin Doughnuts downtown. I knew I would have to go back, and we did. I did a little googling and found that it is a pink tabebuia, or pink trumpet tree, and they are fairly common in South Florida and bloom in the spring. So here it is- spring! Not long from now we’ll be in the pool and at the beach, wearing shorts and tank tops and sipping lemonade again…

And my Holga came in the mail yesterday. These look so fun and I am really looking forward to playing with it- I have to get film first, which is not so easy (it’s 120 rather than 35mm film for those not familiar with Holgas, but I know a place downtown I can get some.)

Holga!

Happenings…

We went to the Garlic Festival in Delray on Valentine’s Day. It was cold and very crowded, but we had a good time. There were a lot of artist booths and we bought Seth this hat, which obviously will still fit him next year.

There were rides, too. It was kind of a mini fair, with much better food. I ate roasted garlic pizza and a mushroom stuffed with garlic, spinach and artichoke, and Manny had a wonderful garlic curry chicken kebab.

I took these in the back yard at Manny’s parents’ house yesterday. Jackie has pretty things hanging from her tree.

One of Seth’s favorite activities of late is bubbles. He thinks they are just great. And I think he’s just great.

We are going on our trip to Massachusetts in one week. Today we bought an umbrella stroller- basically one that folds up nice and compactly rather than our big beastly one, for the airports and whatnot. I found this great website with lots of tips for traveling with babies and toddlers. (Is Seth a baby or toddler now… what is the definition of toddler…one? two? walking?… I’m not sure.) I’ll admit I’ve been sort of nervous about the traveling part with him at this age. So often he just wants to get down and crawl around and move. It should be interesting….

We have some shopping to do for warmer attire for our trip. Hopefully we’ll hit some good sales.

I’m working on a new website for my business, which I am very excited about. I am really hoping I can manage to get it up and running before we leave. I feel like this will be more professional looking and more of a representation of who I am as a photographer.

This post was a bit random, but that’s where my mind is right now. I almost started listing out all the things that are on my mind that I need to do, but I will spare you that. Goodnight all.
